At Mips, our story began with a passion for protecting the brain. Our founder, Hans von Holst, a Swedish neurosurgeon and professor emeritus was driven to understand why people were still suffering from brain injuries despite wearing helmets. In 1996, he teamed up with engineer Peter Halldin, a researcher at the Swedish Royal Institute (KTH), to conduct extensive research on head and neck injuries.
Mips technology can be easily integrated into both new and existing helmet models and is sold to helmet manufacturers worldwide to enhance protection. This means that the helmet industry can sell a helmet intended to help reduce rotational force to the head, thereby differentiating the brand and creating added value. The helmet industry actively markets the benefit of the solution as well as the Mips brand to the end-user. Up to and including 2021, a total of 30 million units were sold, and these have been implemented in as many helmets, distributed among winter sports, cycling, horse riding, and motor racing.
At Mips, we have been at the forefront of helmet safety technology for over 25 years. Our dedication to research and development, in partnership with leading institutions such as the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Karolinska Institute, has led to the creation of our patented Mips safety system.
